{"id":56613,"date":"2022-12-24T22:45:40","date_gmt":"2022-12-25T03:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=56613"},"modified":"2022-12-24T22:45:45","modified_gmt":"2022-12-25T03:45:45","slug":"fda-plans-to-change-the-plan-b-label-to-clarify-its-not-an-abortion-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2022\/12\/fda-plans-to-change-the-plan-b-label-to-clarify-its-not-an-abortion-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA plans to change the Plan B label to clarify it\u2019s not an abortion pill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that it will overhaul packaging labels for the emergency contraceptive pill, Plan B, that women can take after having sex to prevent pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Plan-B-626x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56614\" width=\"293\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Plan-B-626x1024.jpg 626w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Plan-B-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Plan-B.jpg 661w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The federal agency said it will remove references on the contraception\u2019s packaging that claim, without scientific evidence, that the pill prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in the womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new labels are intended to further distinguish the emergency contraception \u2014 also known as the morning-after pill \u2014 from abortion pills, which end a pregnancy after a fertilized egg has implanted in the lining of a woman\u2019s uterus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/plan-b-one-step-15-mg-levonorgestrel-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memo<\/a>&nbsp;released Friday, the FDA clarified that taking Plan B pills is not the same as an abortion, a fact that has long been understood in the medical community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cEvidence does not support that the drug affects implantation or maintenance of a pregnancy after implantation, therefore it does not terminate a pregnancy,\u201d the FDA said in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency added that emergency contraception works similarly to birth control in preventing pregnancy, but contains a higher dose of levonorgestrel.
