Several of the elected officials were my former students and you cannot imagine how proud I am of those that I remember as children and youth in middle school or high school.

It is so easy to see a child’s future by observing them in their younger years. Children raised in a Christian home by Christian parents are obviously trained in ways others are not. One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 22: 6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

If there is any one verse in the entire Bible that every parent and teacher should be aware of it is Proverbs 22: 6. The avoidance of this admonition by Solomon is dangerous and scary and produces a rebellious generation. I see this verse as not only a recommendation, but also a warning, a prophesy and a justification. It, of course has religious connotations but secular world applications are also contained.

The imagination and creativity employed by the teachers of the school were unlimited. The swearing in ceremony as a “teachable moment” and an opportunity to teach about government, elections, careers and citizenship must have been untethered.

I can only imagine the concepts and principles of governments (local, state and federal) that were and will be taught because of this event.

So many times we miss these obvious occasions. I well remember my greatest teacher, my dad, taking advantage of the many opportunities. In teaching me the skills of his trades, he provided me with a lifetime of work in the construction occupations.

When teaching industrial arts, teachable moments came daily in the nature of the subject. At times, I found myself with so many concepts, design ideas, and skills; I was at a loss to determine which one to teach first.

The basic concept of industrial education is to teach the materials, tools and processes used in the construction and manufacturing industries. When teaching hands-on skills the chances for field trips, guest speakers, demonstrations and material types are unlimited.

While other subjects that offer such occasions may seem limited, if we look beyond the surface, all subjects offer such openings. “Work (or think) outside the box” is a current catch-phrase we often hear. To have the swearing in of the county officials at the school was a prime example of “working outside the box.” What phenomenal creativity was employed by the school in arranging that event!

John Steinbeck said “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” Many of us found teaching to be so much more than an occupation. The rewards and satisfaction were priceless and will be cherished for a lifetime.

I find myself in later years still teaching in sermons and writings. To offer a congregation a philosophical sermon without teaching anything is like offering a drink from an empty glass.

John Wooden, head coach of the UCLA Bruins from 1948 until 1975, said “I think the teaching profession contributes more to the future of our society than any other single profession.”

I am so happy to see the teachers and administrators in my home school system seeking and employing methods not considered traditional. Traditional methods in so many cases did not work: it is time those techniques were changed. Today’s cultural attitudes, habits and changes in technology demand the addition of other methods.

Preaching the gospel of our Jesus is teaching at its greatest. His last commandment to us was to “preach this Gospel.” Matthew 28: 18-19 “And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

For many Christians, their greatest witnessing tool is their personal testimony. Telling someone of your experience may be the key to winning them to the saving grace of our crucified and resurrected Christ Jesus. All Christians have a testimony although many do not see theirs as significant. But it is, and there are many in this world that could benefit from hearing your story.

From an evangelistic point of view, some of the most successful mission work trips were when working construction projects and participants were able to work hands-on with local people. Work examples are numerous: food preparation, sewing, Bible study, sports camps, crafts, witnessing are a few. Getting to know the indigenous people personally offers many opportunities to share the Gospel of Christ Jesus.

The example of Christian mission work trips is comparative to utilizing teaching methods that are somewhat unconventional. At times, we have to resort to varying methodology to reach the desired objective. Teachers and evangelicals; let your imaginations run wild.

The advantages of creative teachings are without number. The methods employed by a creative teacher are limited only by his or her imagination. Be alert for the obvious. Current events or simply those actions observed around the school or community make good examples

We are not here to insult or condemn other religions, just to teach the Biblical truths. Jesus was the greatest teacher and He did not try to coerce or intimidate anyone. He simply told them the truth about salvation through the grace and mercy of God. He also taught eternal life through a faith-based belief in Him (John 3: 16).

In whatever state or country you may be in, the responsibility to properly educate children belongs to everyone. I urge parents, teachers and elected officials to assume the responsibility of educator and the teaching of young people as being of primary importance.

We live in a world in which the concept of right and wrong have been omitted from the home and school curriculum. Some actions are acceptable and some are not. These basic rules of civility must be taught; they do not come naturally. The job belongs to all of us.

Once again to the teachers and administrators, “Great job, keep up the good work.” As you well know, those children and youth are the future. I know you’ve heard that thousands of times but it is still true.

To the county officials sworn in at the school, “You’ve certainly started out on the right foot.” Teach, nurture and mentor the children of the county. Your rewards will be fantastic even though they may not become evident for many years.

Written by Van Yandell Exodus 18: 20 “And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they…

[4
2018
