Never trailing in the game, Florida Gulf Coast defeated Kansas City, 73-59, to claim the championship of the 2022 Gulf Coast Showcase on Wednesday night in Hertz Arena in Estero, Florida. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Roos fall to 3-5 overall.<\/p>\n\n\n

FGCU jumped out to a fast lead, taking an 18-7 advantage into the under-12 minute media timeout. The Eagles continued to expand the lead and led 36-23 at the intermission. The FGCU defense gave the Roos fits throughout the first half, allowing Kansas City just 9-of-33 from the field for 27.3 percent, including just 2-of-12 from three-point range (16.7 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n

It was more of the same in the second half, as FGCU grew the lead to as many as 18 points early in the period. The Roos made a run nearing the midway point of the second half, but could get no closer than eight points (54-46). The Eagles built the lead back and cruised to the 73-59 final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four FGCU players scored in double figures, led by Zach Anderson with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Isaiah Thompson with 14 points. The Roos were led by RayQuawndis Mitchell, who scored a game-high 29 points and Shemarri Allen with 10 points. Mitchell set a new Gulf Coast Showcase record with 82 points in the Roos\u2019 three games, surpassing the old mark of 80 points by Mike Daum of South Dakota State in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n
