Ron DeSantis&nbsp;isn&#8217;t known for his subtlety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/desantis-123-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/desantis-123-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/desantis-123-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/desantis-123-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/desantis-123.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But when it comes to&nbsp;abortion, an issue that, after the fall of Roe v. Wade over the summer, became&nbsp;top of mind to the voters he&#8217;ll ask&nbsp;next month for a second term, DeSantis has taken an uncharacteristically avoidant approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor vowed in June to\u00a0&#8220;expand pro-life protections&#8221;\u00a0after the Supreme Court\u00a0handed down the opinion overturning Roe\u00a0but otherwise have either not addressed or declined to elaborate on his vision for abortion policy in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advocates on both sides of the issue&nbsp;told&nbsp;the USA TODAY NETWORK &#8211; Florida&nbsp;that the most likely next step is a so-called heartbeat bill banning the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as mail-in voting has begun ahead of the November election, DeSantis has faced renewed criticism from state Democrats over his silence on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Politico<\/em>\u00a0published a leaked version<\/a>\u00a0of the Supreme Court opinion in May, throwing abortion into the center stage of midterm election politics, the USA TODAY NETWORK &#8211; Florida counted at least 10 times DeSantis dodged specifics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Politico publishes leaked opinion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeSantis did not issue statements on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2022\/05\/page\/7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">governor&#8217;s website<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonDeSantisFL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounts<\/a>&nbsp;reacting to the news. He also wouldn&#8217;t say during a news conference whether he would seek more restrictions beyond the 15-week ban (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 5<\/a>) that went into effect in July,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/florida-playbook\/2022\/05\/04\/scotus-reveal-fuels-floridas-anti-abortion-push-00029852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor released a statement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1540378975251341315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;on June 24&nbsp;saying he would &#8220;work to expand pro-life protections.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full statement read: &#8220;The prayers of millions have been answered. For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history, or structure of the Constitution. By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobbs majority has restored the people&#8217;s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts. Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care, and child welfare.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Public appearances after ruling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the post-Roe statement, DeSantis &#8220;has not seemed eager to engage on the issue,&#8221; the\u00a0<em><u>Tallahassee Democrat<\/u><\/em>\u00a0reported\u00a0on July 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He didn&#8217;t mention the ruling &#8220;during two more recent public appearances and didn\u2019t take questions from reporters after either event. He hasn\u2019t spoken publicly about the ruling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Governor&#8217;s office declines to weigh in<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same\u00a0<em>Democrat<\/em>\u00a0story, governor&#8217;s office-turned-campaign spokesperson Christina Pushaw declined to say whether DeSantis would pursue a six-week ban, which he said he supported during his first gubernatorial campaign in 2018. From the article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Asked if the governor will pursue such a measure, which leading Florida anti-abortion activists have pointed to as a preferred next step in recent days, DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw said \u2018we very much look forward to pursuing additional legislative protections for the unborn but did not offer specifics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In subsequent articles published in July by three more news outlets, representatives from the governor&#8217;s office also declined to elaborate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>DeSantis spokesperson Bryan Griffin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2022\/07\/06\/desantis-stays-quiet-on-abortions-future-in-florida-as-republicans-strategize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the&nbsp;<em>Tampa Bay Times<\/em><\/a>, \u201cWe very much look forward to pursuing additional legislative protections for the unborn. Our future legislative action necessarily depends on the resolution of these legal issues.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cA spokesman for Mr. DeSantis\u2019s office would only refer to a previous statement when asked whether a special session of the legislature \u2014 or any other move related to abortion \u2014 was in the offing,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/12\/us\/politics\/desantis-florida-abortion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;reported<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/political\/florida-democrats-call-for-clarity-on-governors-plans-for-abortion-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to&nbsp;<em>WPTV NewsChannel 5<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;\u201cPress Secretary Christina Pushaw said the office didn&#8217;t have anything to add to the governor&#8217;s prior statement but added, \u2018we will continue to defend HB 5, and the fight to protect life is far from over.\u2019\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After the August Cabinet meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a statewide Cabinet meeting that happened to fall on the Aug. 23 Primary, DeSantis again sidestepped the issue. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/floridaphoenix.com\/2022\/08\/23\/desantis-remains-cautious-on-abortion-fried-says-fl-women-need-to-know-what-governor-will-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Florida Phoenix<\/em>&nbsp;reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we want to make sure that what we\u2019ve done will stick, and then work with the Legislature,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I will tell you, you know, that 15 (week ban) was very difficult to be able to achieve. We were happy that we were able to achieve it. And so, you know, we look forward to and welcome future endeavors. But we realize there\u2019s still going to be a fight on the legal end on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked at that point what sort of abortion-related legislation he\u2019d like to see, DeSantis left the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One last dodgeball<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked this week what specific abortion restrictions the governor is seeking, spokesperson Bryan Griffin fell back on previous statements in a response to the USA TODAY NETWORK &#8211; Florida:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As the governor stated after the Dobbs decision was released, we celebrate that decision as an answer to countless prayers from across the State of Florida and the nation. We very much look forward to pursuing additional legislative protections for the unborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Currently, we are actively engaged in a legal battle over the recently signed pro-life HB 5. These challenges are pending in state court and are distinct from the federal issues resolved by the Supreme Court. Our future legislative action necessarily depends on the resolution of these legal issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are in continuous contact with the legislature as this litigation proceeds, and we look forward to future policy plans to defend the unborn.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida&nbsp;Gov.
