A group of islanders are calling on the county to take control of the island which is now governed by a mayor and town council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents backing the effort are citing mismanagement of the town\u2019s recovery efforts and concerns about the town\u2019s ability to financially support the rebuilding efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just think that it\u2019s time to go back to the county,\u201d said Tracey Gore, a former Fort Myers Beach Mayor. \u201cNot being able to go to our properties, keeping our contractors off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Fort-Myers-Beach-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Fort-Myers-Beach-2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Fort-Myers-Beach-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Fort-Myers-Beach-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg for Gore.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way it\u2019s being managed, I don\u2019t know how much money the town has left to pay for all this cleanup,\u201d Gore said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former mayor now wants no one to be the mayor of the seven-mile-long island. This was the case before the town was officially incorporated in 1995.
