Those who stayed self-reported after officials asked in the days prior to the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217; going to take &#8220;weeks or months&#8221; to restore the island, with five breaches of the Sanibel Island Causeway, cutting off mainland transportation to the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way on or off is by boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/SANIBEL_MAYOR.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55275\"\/><figcaption>Mayor Holly Smith and Staff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have tedious work over the next several months,&#8221; Mayor Holly Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Manager Dana Souza&nbsp;and Smith said they are evaluating&nbsp;the extent of the damage in their initial look at the island, along with the police and fire departments, the Department of Public Works and&nbsp;Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They spoke from the Sanibel Room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday night, less than 24 hours after Hurricane Island struck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t invite&nbsp;residents back to island now,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;I know this is hard. &#8230; It\u2019s still too dangerous until we can complete&nbsp;this assessment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Souza said he believes the entire island was affected by storm surge, with estimates ranging from 8 to 15 feet throughout the split of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s not a single structure that hasn\u2019t been impacted,&#8221; said Police Chief Bill Dalton said &#8220;I&#8217;m not saying all destroyed, but it&#8217;s noticeably worse than (2004&#8217;s Hurricane)&nbsp;Charley and&nbsp;the worst I&#8217;ve seen in 20 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Souza said safety is a major concern, with downed limbs and power poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Search and rescue can\u2019t be compromised,&#8221; Souza said, adding police, fire and DPW are systematically going through the island.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, staff will review the island&#8217;s electrical infrastructure and&nbsp;water system and complete a helicopter fly-over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanibel Causeway Breeches<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With five breeches in the 3-mile span, Smith said officials will contract with barge operators to bring critical transportation to the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The barge will begin transporting emergency vehicles, including Department of Public Works trucks, police vehicles and fire engines evacuated prior to the storm, as well as LCEC repair trucks..&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Souza said he hopes to have the barge onsite by Sunday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is not the first time Sanibel has been through this,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are very good at handling things like this.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sanibel Island officials said Thursday two people died and rescuers&nbsp;evacuated at least 40 who were not injured and took 12 people to hospitals.&nbsp;There could be more deaths and injuries as&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":55275,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[1731],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/55274"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=55274"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/55274\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":55276,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/55274\/revisions\/55276"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/55275"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=55274"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=55274"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=55274"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
