{"id":55218,"date":"2022-09-29T00:38:56","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T04:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=55218"},"modified":"2022-09-29T00:39:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T04:39:00","slug":"remembering-those-with-disabilities-before-during-and-after-the-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2022\/09\/remembering-those-with-disabilities-before-during-and-after-the-hurricane\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Those with Disabilities Before, During and After the Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by Trimmel Gomes<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gr-80830-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gr-80830-1-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gr-80830-1-1-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In an appeal to the public as Hurricane Ian barreled toward Florida, an advocate for persons with disabilities urged everyone to consider checking in with neighbors, friends or family members who may benefit from a helping hand.<br><br>Mandy Bianchi, executive director of the group Ability1st, wrote a column in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/opinion\/2022\/09\/28\/remember-persons-disabilities-during-storms-opinion\/8122985001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tallahassee Democrat<\/a>&nbsp;published the morning before the then-Category 4 storm made landfall in Southwest Florida, explaining those who are vulnerable have a lot more to consider during hurricane preparedness, including obstacles such as getting emergency notification and transportation; evacuation; sheltering; access to medications, refrigeration, and backup power.<br><br>&#8220;For people who need oxygen or a CPAP machine or anything along those lines, if we lose power that is really a frightening situation for people who rely on those type of devices,&#8221; Bianchi pointed out.<br><br>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/impacts\/florida.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 4 adults in Florida<\/a>&nbsp;has a disability, which is more than 4.5 million people.<br><br>Bianchi stressed it is important to think before, during and after the storm about any person who might be in need of help, and to check on them. She added if you are scared of what could happen during a storm, they might be even more so, and every little bit counts.<br><br>Bianchi&#8217;s organization works across six Florida counties and provides services to people who are homeless.
