{"id":54162,"date":"2022-07-27T01:23:11","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T05:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=54162"},"modified":"2022-07-27T01:23:18","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T05:23:18","slug":"lehigh-hot-dog-guy-was-told-to-move-off-county-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2022\/07\/lehigh-hot-dog-guy-was-told-to-move-off-county-property\/","title":{"rendered":"Lehigh &#8220;Hot Dog Guy&#8221; was told to move off county property"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Lehigh Acres man that runs a roadside hot dog stand is now being forced to relocate his setup from the parking lot of a property now owned by Lee County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kelvis-Maiguel.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54163\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last two months, the parking spot Kelvis Maiguel, better known as the \u2018Lehigh Hot Dog Guy\u2019, usually occupies has been empty. Maiguel was recovering from being shot several times on May 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 19, one day before his birthday, he returned to the spot he earned the nickname. Two days later, a county employee stopped at his stand to tell him he couldn\u2019t set up shop here anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt least give me some more time before saying \u2018Yo, pick up all your stuff and go,\u2019\u201d Maiguel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s been at the corner serving up his signature smile and flavorful franks for the last year and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey of Ceberiano\u2019s Hot Dogs didn\u2019t start here, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a few attempts before we even came to this area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Maiguel and his mother Ana Dannic, their corner spot was the crown jewel of their operation. They never had a problem until Maiguel was shot on May 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lee County Sheriff\u2019s Office said 25-year-old James Gonzalez allegedly walked up and shot Maiguel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy the county came up out of nowhere right now telling us we gotta leave, that\u2019s baffling me,\u201d Maiguel said. \u201cI\u2019m thinking its cause I got shot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lee County employee informed them that their stand would no longer be allowed to be in the parking lot of the still vacant complex.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"387\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/TaxMapImage.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/TaxMapImage.png 387w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/TaxMapImage-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe told us that we couldn\u2019t be on the property because it could be a liability,\u201d Dannic said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they started, they said the plaza was privately owned. Since then, Lee County bought the building in Nov 2021 to create their East Lee County Government Complex.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"387\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/photo.jpg 387w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/photo-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson said private businesses aren\u2019t allowed to do business on county property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe county recently acquired this property for its east Lee County government complex for several different governmental agencies,\u201d said a Lee County Spokesperson. \u201cPrivate-sector vendors such as the Ceberiano\u2019s Hot Dogs &amp; More are not allowed to operate on county property. With the pending renovation and construction of the facility and property, it was noted Ceberiano\u2019s was operating in the parking lot. Also, issues exist if a business such as this operates in the roadway right of way. Due to safety concerns, it is not permitted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have no problem getting permits. We have no problem signing a lease,\u201d Dannis said. \u201cWe don\u2019t need anything but a parking spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can get a permit to be there, but the county isn\u2019t looking for any vendors, saying the building is now under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny vendor on county property needs to go through the county\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leegov.com\/procurement\" target=\"_blank\">procurement process<\/a>\u00a0but the county is not seeking a vendor at the East Lee County government complex at this time. Renovation and construction of the facility and property are slated, essentially making this site an active construction site, which involves safety measures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just at a loss at this point,\u201d said Dannic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far this week, Kelvis is still setting up here, minus being washed out by rain Tuesday afternoon. However, this is his last week here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen one door closes, the other one opens and that\u2019s God\u2019s way of moving to something better,\u201d Maiguel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where exactly is that better opportunity? Well, they don\u2019t know just yet.
