It becomes dangerous when a person, bird or animal contacts two potentials. For example, if a bird is perched on a wire, with a stick in its mouth and the stick contacts another piece of electrical equipment, the bird forms a circuit and can be electrocuted. Electricity is always looking for a way to get to the ground. If the bird is not touching the ground, or anything in contact with the ground, it remains safe.

LCEC advises not taking any chances when it comes to power line safety. Never touch an energized line! Always assume a downed power line is energized and stay clear. Trained utility workers wear special safety equipment and understand the way electricity works so they are able to work on the electric system safely.

Water and metal are some of the best conductors of electricity. The human body is mostly water. Contacting electric facilities and the ground at the same time will complete the path to ground and seriously or fatally hurt you. Touching something that is in contact with electricity and the ground, such as a tree, ladder or kite, makes you become the conductor. Always look up and call to request a free locator before you dig.

If your vehicle should come in contact with a downed power line, stay inside until help arrives. When you have help, jump clear of the vehicle and avoid touching the ground and the vehicle at the same time. Shuffle far away from the vehicle keeping both feet on contact with the ground at all times.

Contact www.lcec.net for more safety tips from LCEC.

Birds can perch on power lines safely but humans must be very cautious around electric facilities.
