Ron DeSantis and Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo said the testing guidance is based on high-value testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DESANTIS-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DESANTIS-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DESANTIS-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DESANTIS-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DESANTIS.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>High-value testing is when people who have symptoms get tested in order to access treatment that would change their outcomes if they&#8217;re positive, according to Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both DeSantis and Ladapo made it clear that the guidance is purely to steer people and each individual can choose what works best for them in their own situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Testing Guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have COVID-19 symptoms and are high-risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Should get tested for COVID-19 soon after symptom onset.<\/li><li>Should seek early monoclonal antibody or antiviral drug treatment and seek other medical treatment as necessary.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have symptoms but aren&#8217;t high-risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Should consider getting tested for COVID-19 soon after symptom onset.<\/li><li>Seek medical treatment only as necessary.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have no symptoms (even if exposed):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>COVID-19 testing is unlikely to have any clinical benefits.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ladapo said this is &#8220;the example that we&#8217;re setting in Florida&#8221; for the rest of the country, before discussing how consistently testing without symptoms isn&#8217;t &#8220;normal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guidance was released on the same day DeSantis announced&nbsp;Florida is sending out one million at-home COVID-19 tests&nbsp;to nursing homes and long-term care facilities across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the federal government hasn&#8217;t followed through after promising tests to people, and so the state took matters into its own hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is that there will also be enough supply to send tests to community sites where there have also been vaccination centers, DeSantis said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida released its new guidance for COVID-19 testing Thursday.
