It calls for the 13- and 14-year old boys, who were arrested Sept. 9 and each charged with conspiracy to commit a mass shooting at Harns Marsh Middle School, to be kept “out of our schools” and suggests they be homeschooled.

The change.org petition that summarizes media reports about the alleged plot is addressed the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of Justice and Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Those agencies would need to respond to the petition, Lee Schools spokesman Rob Spicer said. He added, by law, the petition needs to be directed toward state lawmakers if it is to be successful.

The organizers of the petition weren’t available for comment.

The school district maintains all student discipline is private and protected from release. It will not release the outcome, nor confirm any reporting or rumors about a student’s discipline, Spicker said.

Schools can proceed with the disciplinary process while students are in the custody of law enforcement. If they are released while the process is still taking place, the student is placed on out-of-school suspension. Students on out-of-school suspension continue their classes on Google Classroom.

Lee Schools’ protocol for serious offenses first calls for a recommendation of discipline with four possible outcomes, according the Code of Conduct for Students.

A school can recommend a student for expulsion which is then reviewed by an administrator and sent to the district’s legal department for review. If the superintendent recommends expulsion, the Lee County School Board must approve it.

If a student is expelled, the duration is the remainder of the school year the offense took place and the entire following school year. Pending appeal from parents, the expelled student’s options are to continue learning at private school, home school or a virtual school other than Lee Virtual School and Florida Virtual School.

Another outcome is the school ordering reassignment for 180 days at Success Academy with a return to the school after that. Schools also can request a “Do Not Return” order preventing the student’s return.

The final disciplinary measures are 45 and 90 days at Success Academy.

The mother of one of the teenagers accused of planning a school shooting at a Lehigh Acres middle school is planning to homeschool her son amid calls for him to…

[57,32
694
