{"id":50226,"date":"2021-08-27T20:43:32","date_gmt":"2021-08-28T00:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=50226"},"modified":"2021-08-27T21:15:23","modified_gmt":"2021-08-28T01:15:23","slug":"lee-mosquito-control-districts-find-widespread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2021\/08\/lee-mosquito-control-districts-find-widespread\/","title":{"rendered":"Lee mosquito control district finds &#8216;widespread&#8217; West Nile Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In Lee County, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lcmcd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mosquito control district\u2019s sentinel chicken flocks<\/a>&nbsp;have identified West Nile Virus in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/West-Nile-Virus.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/West-Nile-Virus.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/West-Nile-Virus-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/West-Nile-Virus-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe most recently found them in Lehigh, North Fort Myers, and central Fort Myers, down by Bonita (Springs) and on Pine Island,\u201d said Eric Jackson, deputy director at Lee County Mosquito &amp; Hyacinth Control Districts. \u201cPretty much throughout the county.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mosquitos that carry the West Nile virus, called Culex, can lay eggs on top of standing water, so it\u2019s important for residents around Southwest Florida to dump any standing water in their yards on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And culex, a species that is native to the area, prefers dirty, nutrient-rich waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee County mosquito control district is applying&nbsp;larvicide and adulticide to curb the pesky mosquito populations and keep human diseases at bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of boots on the ground,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson urges residents to stay vigilant around their yards. Dumping water from buckets, birdbaths and making sure fountains and pools aren\u2019t stagnant breeding grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother thing to pay attention to are gutters on houses,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cYou could have mosquitoes growing right above head because you have clogged gutters.
