Nearly 30 family members joined via Zoom to wish her a happy birthday, and 50 residents of Fountain Crest were in attendance. Her granddaughter Renee Shipton, and great-grandchildren helped organize the event and put together a dedicated PowerPoint about Joan\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the presentation, party-goers joined in a small game on who knows Joan best, complete with a door prize. Of course, the birthday was not complete without the honored guest\u2019s favorite meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe requested a fried chicken dinner, which is her favorite, plus we all played a game of Bingo, which one of her great granddaughters\u2019s actually won,\u201d\u00a0Shipton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the party, Joan\u2019s life story was told via PowerPoint by her granddaughter, as guests got a glimpse into the story of how she and her two sisters and brother, who grew up in an orphanage in Helena, Oklahoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After being adopted, Joan, who was formerly named Carrie Ann went to live in New Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once she graduated high school, she went to business school and then went to work at Woolworth. She then met and married her husband Watson Evans and had daughter Barabara Evans, their first and only child. When Joan\u2019s husband went to serve in the Philippines, she went to work as a clerk at the Kirkland Airforce Base. Joan and her husband Watson were married 64 years before he passed away in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In March 2015, Joan moved with granddaughter Renee Shipton to Florida. Not long after, Joan began living at Fountain Crest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to granddaughter Renee, when asked what she liked most about her new home at Fountain Crest, she replied, \u201cthe love the people that work here shows us and the great new friendships that I\u2019ve built here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Evans, who is legally blind now, remains a very active member of the Fountain Crest community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe doesn\u2019t let that stop her from doing the things she loves,\u201d Shipton, who is also the Regional Director Center for Independent Living Gulf Coast said.\u201cWe all must realize that each one of us will suffer some type of disability as we get older. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to be conscious of others who have limitations or a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Evans was touched by her family\u2019s effort to make the day extra special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
