{"id":49137,"date":"2021-06-09T16:19:52","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T20:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=49137"},"modified":"2021-06-09T16:20:01","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T20:20:01","slug":"fbi-investigation-puts-fort-myers-police-officer-back-on-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2021\/06\/fbi-investigation-puts-fort-myers-police-officer-back-on-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI investigation puts Fort Myers police Officer back on leave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Fort Myers police officer that returned to work after four years on administrative leave has once again been placed on leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/fmpolice.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49138\" width=\"304\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/fmpolice.png 508w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/fmpolice-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><figcaption>Officer Jason Jackson<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Officer Jason Jackson returned to duty full-time on April 6, 2021, after a federal justice investigation failed to turn up criminal charges against Jackson and three other officers who retired while they were under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allegations against Jackson, Melvin Perry, Rick Notaro and Michael Forbes come from an audit of the Fort Myers Police Department by the Freeh Group International Solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audit alleged police corruption, favoritism in the department and lack of resources that kept officers from solving violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson was on paid leave during the length of the federal justice investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Fort Myers police say, an internal affairs investigation has been launched into allegations of misconduct by Jackon based on documents provided by the FBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Myers police Chief Derrick Diggs said, in a statement, the FBI provided information to the police department based on their investigation of Jackson and the other officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diggs said the internal investigation will remain confidential until it is completed, citing Florida\u2019s Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Fort-Myers-Police-Chief-Diggs-1024x635.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49139\" width=\"380\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Fort-Myers-Police-Chief-Diggs-1024x635.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Fort-Myers-Police-Chief-Diggs-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Fort-Myers-Police-Chief-Diggs-768x476.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Fort-Myers-Police-Chief-Diggs.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><figcaption>Fort Myers Police Chief Diggs<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation, FMPD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Myers City Council unanimously votes to keep Diggs as Police Chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fort Myers City Council is more than happy to hear that Chief Diggs\u2019 work in this city will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen we can start negotiating the contract,\u201d said Streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Diggs\u2019 contract isn\u2019t actually up until August.
