Spencer Roach (R)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you think we should cap the THC in prescribed marijuana?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an attack on medicine\u2026 That\u2019s what users and doctors said Tuesday as a House panel advanced THC caps on medical marijuana along party lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THC is the stuff that gets users high and Rep. Spencer Roach, a North Fort Myers Republican, thinks the state needs to rein it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe have doctors taking advantage of this medical marijuana program to get rich,\u201d Rep. Roach told lawmakers in the Professions &amp; Public Health Subcommittee. \u201cWe have patients who are drug-seeking\u2014 taking advantage of this program to get high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/medical-marijuana.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Roach is sponsoring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=72700&amp;SessionId=90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 1455<\/a>&nbsp;this session, which would cap smoke able THC levels at 10%. That\u2019s less than what most dispensaries currently offer. Edibles would be limited to 15%. Other cannabis products capped at 60%. Terminal patients are exempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe therapeutic medicinal value of THC hovers around three to four percent,\u201d said Rep. Roach. \u201cWe have not only a responsibility to act now but an opportunity to act before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THC caps aren\u2019t anything new. Some lawmakers have been trying to pass them since the state started allowing smoke able medical marijuana in 2019. The opposition was fierce enough to kill both attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the case during Tuesday\u2019s vote, despite concerns from patients and doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SASHA-NOE.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47730\" width=\"197\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SASHA-NOE.jpg 480w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SASHA-NOE-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Sasha Noe<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis bill affects cost, creates confusion for patients, and also infringes on comprehensive medical care that I provide to my patients every single day,\u201d said Dr. Sasha Noe, a Florida family physician, speaking to lawmakers during public testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats said the bill\u2019s passage would equate to a new tax for Florida\u2019s nearly 500,000 registered medical marijuana users who would need to buy more products to keep treatment levels the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was some initial hesitancy from Republicans before the vote, but all fell in line to overpower Democrats 12 to 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, Nikki Fried, the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture, said that placing a cap on medical marijuana\u2019s THC content, it could force patients to seek alternatives on the black market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Robert Andrade, R-Pensacola, felt bringing more regulation to medical marijuana just made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery other medical drug has a cap,\u201d he said. \u201cA cap on dosage. A cap on control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill now faces two more committee hurdles before reaching the full House. But its biggest challenge will likely in the Senate where a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=72755&amp;SessionId=90\">&nbsp;similar measure<\/a>&nbsp;has yet to be scheduled for the committee discussion. Lawmakers there have blocked THC cap legislation for the last two years. And of course, any measure that gets through both chambers will likely need the<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
