The Florida Bill for toilet-to-tap water is gaining traction after it passed through the Environmental, Agriculture, and Flooding Subcommittee 17-0.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toilet-to-tap is a system in which cities would stop dumping sewage water and instead, turn it into healthy drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant Professor at FGCU, Lauren Redfern, believes this system could be a viable solution to help combat Florida\u2019s booming population growth (estimated to grow 23 percent by 2040 according to the Senate Bill).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s be nice not to have a big tank of water, these damns or these lakes to create drinking water. You could use a water source that is already there with the waste water,\u201d explained Redfern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest hurdle moving forward: trying to convince the public it is safe to drink former sewage water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce the public kind of see\u2019s the water is high quality, there is a great amount of acceptance but before, when you just hear that you have a toilet to tap water the public is kind of concerned about that,\u201d said Redfern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
