{"id":47655,"date":"2021-03-05T12:34:22","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T17:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=47655"},"modified":"2021-03-05T12:34:46","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T17:34:46","slug":"san-diego-zoo-vaccinates-great-apes-against-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2021\/03\/san-diego-zoo-vaccinates-great-apes-against-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego Zoo vaccinates great apes against COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The San Diego Zoo is in the process of inoculating many of its great apes after several of its gorillas contracted SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/gorillas.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/gorillas.jpg 750w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/gorillas-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The shots were provided by Zoetis, a producer of medicine and vaccinations for animals, and they were not for human use,<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/san-diego-zoo-vaccinates-great-apes-covid-19\/story?id=76267313&amp;cid=clicksource_4380645_3_heads_hero_live_headlines_hed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;reported ABC News.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cZoetis provided our veterinarians with a limited supply of recombinant purified spike protein vaccine, intended for use in protecting animals against SARS-CoV-2,\u201d San Diego Zoo said in a statement. \u201cThe vaccine doses originated from a supply strictly intended for nonhuman use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The animals are getting two shots three weeks apart, similar to the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines developed for humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials said they haven\u2019t seen any adverse reactions to the injections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The troop of gorillas at San Diego Zoo Safari Park that had been infected is on the mend, reported ABC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe gorilla troop at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are doing well and appear to be on their way to a full recovery,\u201d officials said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gorillas will not be vaccinated \u201cas they were exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and we assume their own immune systems have developed antibodies to the virus,\u201d the park said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaccines for the primates known as humans remain in short supply around the country, including California, reported ABC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Diego Zoo is in the process of inoculating many of its great apes after several of its gorillas contracted SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in January.
