Dr. Seuss Enterprises said they made the decision after consulting educators and reviewing its catalog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCeasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises\u2019s catalog represents and supports all communities and families,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move also comes a day after President Biden avoided mentioning Dr. Seuss during his proclamation for Read Across America Day, which is the same day as Seuss\u2019 birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His response is unlike that of former President Barack Obama, who in 2014 during his Read Across America Day address said Seuss\u2019 tales \u201cchallenge dictators and discrimination. They call us to open our minds, to take responsibility for ourselves and our planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, is one of the best-known authors in the world, the man behind beloved classics like \u201cThe Cat in the Hat,\u201d \u201cGreen Eggs and Ham\u201d and \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas,\u201d among others. Over 650 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, the Washington Post reported in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Seuss was in college, he reportedly published racist and anti-semitic work spanning back into the 1920s. He portrayed Black boxers as gorillas and portrayed Jewish characters as financially stingy, according to a study published in the \u201cResearch on Diversity in Youth Literature,\u201d journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 2019 study, 50 Dr. Seuss books were examined, and 43 out of the 45 characters of color have \u201ccharacteristics aligning with the definition of Orientalism,\u201d or the stereotypical, offensive portrayal of Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn (\u201cThe Cat\u2019s Quizzer\u201d), the Japanese character is referred to as \u2018a Japanese,\u2019 has a bright yellow face, and is standing on what appears to be Mt. Fuji,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study also concludes that since most of Seuss\u2019 characters are white, his works perpetuate white supremacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
