Bonilla opened fire at the street festival with thousands of\ncitizens in attendance. In just seconds, the lives of so many people were\nchanged forever and a young man on a break from college he was attending on a\nfootball scholarship lost his life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This has been a case unlike any other, due to the many\npeople who were attending the large outdoor Zombicon festival, estimated at\n20,000 people, as well as with so many attending wearing zombie costumes. Many\nwere wearing fake blood and carrying fake firearms as part of their costumes.\nWhen the shooting started, people ran for cover causing even more chaos at the\nscene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The FBI and the Fort Myers Police Department were the\ncollaborative lead agencies in investigating this crime. The Lee County\nSheriff\u2019s Office led by Sheriff Carmine Marceno, Collier County Sheriff\u2019s\nOffice led by Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, and the Florida Department of Law\nEnforcement also assisted in this large, detailed, investigation. Members of\nthe State Attorney\u2019s Office worked with our law enforcement partners to put together\nthe case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They looked at surveillance video from cameras and spoke to\nmany potential witnesses. The dedication to the case and review of the evidence\nled to the defendant early on, as a suspect. More work by the FBI and Fort\nMyers Police Department led to Bonilla\u2019s arrest after Bonilla spoke to multiple\npeople about what he had done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
