The Publix statement does not\naddress concealed weapons and a company spokeswoman in Alabama declined to\nelaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more retailers are taking a stance on sales of guns\nand ammunition in response to the nation\u2019s growing exasperation over gun\nviolence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, some of the nation\u2019s bigger retail chains that\naren\u2019t in the business of selling firearms are crafting policies against openly\ncarrying guns. They include Kroger, the nation\u2019s largest grocery chain with\n2,800 stores, plus CVS, Walgreens and Wegmans, according to The Washington\nPost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other well-known chains like Target, Starbucks and Chipotle\nhave had policies against open carry for years, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart has made headlines in recent weeks, saying it will\nstop selling ammunition for military-style rifles and handguns. The company\nalso announced recently that it will ask customers to stop openly carrying guns\nin its 4,750 U.S. stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart\u2019s announcement came just days after 22 people were\nkilled in a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Another 25 people\nwere wounded in the Aug. 3 massacre in which gunman Patrick Crusius, 21, allegedly\ntargeted Mexicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart\u2019s decisions have riled the National Rifle\nAssociation, which addressed the issue in a Sept. 8 article on its website\nsaying Walmart risks alienating its pro-gun shoppers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart\u2019s policies \u201cwill limit even further the options its\ncustomers have to defend themselves and their families against violent\ncriminals,\u201d the NRA said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Publix Super Markets has added its name to a growing list of retailers asking customers to refrain from brandishing firearms while shopping.
