Of course, since then, technology has helped meteorologists give us\ndays, if not, weeks in advance to prepare. We should be thankful that we now live\nin an era where we can take advantage of time to protect our loved-ones as well\nas personal property, and if ever we lost power to our home, we have the\nability to have already stored for ourselves and others, food, water and other\nprecious-life sustaining items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\nhas also changed however over the course of time since the official record\nkeeping of hurricanes impacting the United States. are people\u2019s attitudes. Even\nin the course of my short life-time of nearly 60 years, I have come to see a\nprevalent attitude of what we used to call, \u201cThe Golden Rule\u201d, that is&#8212;treat\nothers, as you would wish to be treated\u201d, to become today\u2019s, \u201cstick-it to\neverybody else whenever you can.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nsome days before Hurricane Dorian\u2019s arrival to Florida, I couldn\u2019t help but\nnotice people hoarding food and water. If that wasn\u2019t bad enough, price gouging\nby stores, gasoline stations and convenient stores for water and gasoline, were\ncommon place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like\nmany who now call Florida as \u201chome\u201d, I hail from a State where family and\nfriends were important. If I had an emergency and asked one of my family\nmembers or friends for help, they would indeed drop everything and come\nimmediately to help. That same willingness seemingly is missing here in\nFlorida, or at least when a hurricane is forecast to hit us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely,\nwe all have an ability to be better than this, and I have some suggestions that\nmay help,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Before hurricane Season begins,\nstock-up on nonperishable foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When hurricane season begins,\npurchase an extra case of water every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Have extra gasoline containers\nalready filled. You can always use the gas in your vehicle later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Be a good neighbor, if you\nstock-up early, you can share with those who may later be in need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Paul Waldmiller Did you know that since 1851, the United States has been hit with nearly 300 hurricanes?
