{"id":43843,"date":"2019-07-15T14:46:56","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T18:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=43843"},"modified":"2019-07-15T14:47:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T18:47:13","slug":"fdot-and-fhp-announces-operation-southern-shield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2019\/07\/fdot-and-fhp-announces-operation-southern-shield\/","title":{"rendered":"FDOT and FHP Announces \u201cOperation Southern Shield\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/5d2bba13cdbb3.image_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/5d2bba13cdbb3.image_.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/5d2bba13cdbb3.image_-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Today,\nthe Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), in collaboration with the Florida\nDepartment of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and its division of\nthe Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), announced the kick-off of \u201cOperation Southern\nShield,\u201d a joint effort with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\n(NHTSA) and the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.\nState and local law enforcement agencies in all five states will be conducting\na week-long speed enforcement campaign, and FHP will be specifically focused on\ndetecting and citing drivers for exceeding the posted speed limits across\nFlorida\u2019s high-speed corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to NHTSA, in 2017, speeding was a contributing factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities nationwide, killing more than 9,000 people. One of the primary reasons that speed-related crashes have such detrimental effects is that the increased velocity and force of impact works against the usefulness of safety equipment, such as seat belts and airbags. FDOT Secretary Kevin J. Thibault said, \u201cIt is a Department priority to bring attention to the dangers of speeding on our roadways and we are proud to join Operation Southern Shield in this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary\ndata from the FLHSMV shows more than 10,590 crashes in 2018 in Florida\ninvolving speeding or driving too fast for conditions. Speeding was a\ncontributing factor in 8.7% of all crash fatalities statewide, resulting in\nmore than 270 fatalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nFlorida Highway Patrol is committed to providing highway safety with our law\nenforcement partners,\u201d said Colonel Gene S.
