A\ngrassroots group working to make school bus stops safer is looking for some\nhelp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benches\nFor Our Babes will host a bench building event on Saturday, June 15, from 9\na.m. to 3 p.m. at Mirror Lakes Golf in Lehigh Acres. Those interested in\nvolunteering need to arrive at the event by 9 a.m. and ask to be directed to\nthe maintenance facility at the golf course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presently\nthe group is accepting donations, materials and businesses who want to sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We\nneed people to help build as well. Anyone who has a truck or trailer and\nindividuals good with their hands. We have also had businesses sponsor a lunch\nor entertainment in the past. We try to keep it fun and for the kids, but due\nto the venue of this particular event, we are encouraging the kids be 8 year of\nage and older,” Benches For Our Babes Lehigh Acres group organizer Jamie\nTischner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto Tischner, the group’s goal is to make sure children in the community are\nsafe while waiting for the school bus. They are in constant need for support in\nthe form or coordinating, building benches, dropping off benches at stops, and\ndonations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto Tischner, the issue of bus stop safety does not end with putting in these\nbenches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other\nissues that contribute to unsafe bus stops are poorly lit streets. The county\nis working with LCEC and FPL to repair lights that are down and place new\nstreet lights where there is need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They\nare working on it but it has been slow. That’s going to be crucial part in\nmaking these areas safer for the kids,” Tischner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee\nCounty Sheriff’s Office is helping the group to make these bus stops safe and\nspeak with the kids about ways they can remain safe while waiting for their\nbuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Community\nInformation Officer Kirk Hetrick has been great. We are working together with\nthem and they are watching these stops for speeders. We have also had a few\nbenches stolen already,” Tischner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tischner\nplans to coordinate additional events throughout the summer including a bike\nrun and another bench building event. The group is also looking into ways to\nget permanent cement benches in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
