About the only suspense in the Florida Gulf CoastUniversity women’s basketball team’s 89-40 victory over Savannah\u00a0State in front of 1,115 fans\u00a0on Monday\u00a0night at Alico Arena would be whether all active Eagles players scored. Like most things on this night, FGCU would not be denied asSydnel McCaskill’s 3-pointer late in the game ensured every player had at least one field goal. In addition, all Eagles players had at least one rebound.<\/p>\n

FGCU (11-6), in\u00a0its last non-conference game of the season, was led by Erica Nelson’s 12 points. Jessica Cattani and Nasrin Ulel each had 11. Tytionia Adderly led FGCU in rebounds with ten.<\/p>\n

FGCU opened the game by going on a 25-10 run in the first quarter. The Eagles then outscored Savannah State (2-10) to go into halftime leading 39-21. They put the game away for good by outscoring the Tigers 13-1 to start the third quarter and go up 52-22.<\/p>\n

“We had a good first quarter,” Eagles coach Karl Smesko said. “We had good intensity, made plays and got loose balls. The second quarter was a little shotty but we took control of the game in the third quarter.”<\/p>\n

Smesko went on to say he was very happy with how well the team played.<\/p>\n

“I am very encouraged with how we played today,” he said. “Everyone got at least one basket. Everyone got at least a rebound. Everybody contributed in different areas.”<\/p>\n

With a\u00a0Saturday\u00a0date with ASUN rival Stetson coming up on the road, Smesko knows however that there is plenty of work ahead for his team as it prepares for conference play.<\/p>\n

“We have a chance to be the most improved team (in the ASUN) from the beginning of conference play until the end,” he said. “I am excited for the challenge. I hope they are too.”<\/p>\n
