{"id":41889,"date":"2016-11-25T13:32:15","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T18:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=41889"},"modified":"2016-11-25T13:32:15","modified_gmt":"2016-11-25T18:32:15","slug":"lehigh-acres-middle-aged-students-outnumber-high-students-in-sexual-offense-discipline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2016\/11\/lehigh-acres-middle-aged-students-outnumber-high-students-in-sexual-offense-discipline\/","title":{"rendered":"Lehigh Acres Middle Aged Students Outnumber High Students In Sexual Offense Discipline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Special to the Lehigh Acres Gazette<\/p>\n<p>Lehigh Acres middle school aged students outnumber high school students in discipline for sexual offenses, according to Florida Department of Education data.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2014-15 school year, 126 middle school students were disciplined compared to 84 high school students, according to\u00a0the most current data.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The number of students disciplined for sexual harassment and sexual offenses has risen steadily within the past three school years:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41890\" title=\"sex image\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/sex-image-e1480098623352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Harns Marsh in Lehigh Acres had the highest number of sexual harassment discipline issues in Lehigh Acres.<\/p>\n<p>The School District of Lee County declined interview, but a spokesperson said through email and phone that the aforementioned numbers represent a small percentage of students getting into trouble for sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reports to law enforcement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sexual harassment and sexual offenses are not as serious as sexual battery and sexual assault, which by law must be reported to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u00a0Department of Education\u00a0does not require\u00a0sexual harassment or sexual offenses to be reported to law enforcement, although some schools choose to do so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>School district prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lee County schools utilize a program called \u2018Smarter, Safer, Teens\u2019 which focuses on sexual and dating violence and empowering students to speak out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special to the Lehigh Acres Gazette Lehigh Acres middle school aged students outnumber high school students in discipline for sexual offenses, according to Florida Department of Education data.
