A Lee County deputy at the center of a\u00a0SWAT incident earlier this week\u00a0has been arrested.<\/p>\n

Mark Young faces several felony charges, including domestic battery, assault on an officer and firing into a dwelling.<\/p>\n

Young has been on leave since January after failing a “fitness for duty” test.<\/p>\n

Deputies were called to his home on Cemetery Road in Buckingham late Tuesday after neighbors reported hearing several gunshots. LCSO said Friday that Young fired 12 shots, hitting another home and even firing at deputies.<\/p>\n

Sheriff Mike Scott said Young received mental evaluations after this week’s incident before he was taken into custody.<\/p>\n

“Our deputies were in harm’s way. It matters not if it’s a stranger or one of their own. Bullets are bullets. We take that very seriously,” Scott said.<\/p>\n

He said Young is lucky to be alive.<\/p>\n

Young’s LCSO personnel file indicates he’s been an employee since 1998 and served a two-month leave for a family health issue in 1999. He spent four years in the Marines, including a stint at Guantanamo Bay, and was demoted at LCSO from sergeant to deputy first class in October 2014.<\/p>\n

An Internal Affairs investigation substantiated claims of misconduct, and an LCSO captain was quoted, saying “Sgt. Young often belittles and demeans the deputies on his shift” and “was especially intimidating toward him and (the captain) often felt bullied.”<\/p>\n

An LCSO statement said Young went on family medical leave in December and was relieved of duty, pending a fitness for duty evaluation. He failed a subsequent fitness evaluation on Jan. 15, LCSO said<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
