{"id":38850,"date":"2016-02-12T23:01:40","date_gmt":"2016-02-13T04:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=38850"},"modified":"2016-02-12T23:01:40","modified_gmt":"2016-02-13T04:01:40","slug":"lehigh-acres-mom-says-13-year-old-son-pulled-out-of-class-for-hairstyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2016\/02\/lehigh-acres-mom-says-13-year-old-son-pulled-out-of-class-for-hairstyle\/","title":{"rendered":"Lehigh Acres Mom Says 13-Year-Old Son Pulled Out of Class for Hairstyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-38851\" title=\"hair\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/hair-300x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/hair-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/hair.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A mother says her 13-year-old son was removed by an administrator from his classroom at\u00a0Varsity Lakes Middle School because of his haircut.<\/p>\n<p>School officials say Jovany Rivera\u2019s hair was\u00a0violating\u00a0the\u00a0dress code which prohibits \u201clines\/designs in eyebrows or hair,\u201d but his mom,\u00a0Yasmin Rivera, disagrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt embarrassed, like everyone was looking at me,\u201d said Jovany Rivera.<\/p>\n<p>Yasmin Rivera says her son gets good grades,\u00a0usually stays out of trouble, and she couldn\u2019t understand the trouble behind\u00a0a line in his hair, which she calls a \u2018part.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a design, I\u00a0don\u2019t believe it\u2019s a distraction to anybody in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivera says when she first got a call from the school,\u00a0she was told the issue had been fixed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cShe covered it up is what she said. She covered up his line and that she sent him back to class and I\u00a0said,\u00a0\u2018you covered up his line?\u2019 She goes, \u2018yes, we do that sometimes for students so they can go back to class. Sometimes we spray something in their hair.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When her son\u00a0came home,\u00a0Rivera says\u00a0\u201cI just thought it looked like someone took a sharpie and tried to color it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 13-year-old\u00a0returned to school the next day and when he got in trouble for his hair again, he was sent home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery minute that we pull him out of class for a hairstyle issue is hurting him.\u00a0I\u00a0feel that there\u2019s bigger issues that need to be addressed and this hairstyle is not one,\u201d\u00a0Rivera said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0have friends that are hairdressers and they\u2019ve all told me that it\u2019s a gentlemen\u2019s hair cut, and actually more kids should go to school looking a little bit more clean cut like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Lee County School District said\u00a0the dress code could change next year to accommodate hairstyles like Jovany\u2019s, but\u00a0it\u2019s up to the parent,\u00a0teacher organization to vote on changes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A mother says her 13-year-old son was removed by an administrator from his classroom at\u00a0Varsity Lakes Middle School because of his haircut.
