It was a case of ‘too little, too late,’ for the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team\u00a0on Monday Night as they fell to Bowling Green 82-77 at the Alico Center\u00a0on Monday\u00a0night.\u00a0Despite being down by 16 points twice in the second half, the Eagles (3-2) staged a furious comeback, slicing the Falcons’ (3-2)\u00a0advantage to only four points at 78-74 with 49 seconds left to play, but were unable to come away with the victory.<\/p><\/div>\n

“Give Bowling Green credit,” Eagles coach Joe Dooley said. “They took the fight to us right from the beginning. They played with Energy.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dooley also made mention that Bowling Green outrebounded FGCU 40-28.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I think at one point they had more offensive rebounds that we had rebounds,” he said. “You can’t get outrebounded by 40-28.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Falcons coach Michael Huger seemed to agree with Dooley’s assessment.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I thought we played very well from start to finish,” Huger said. “We played with energy.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, FGCU when ahead 3-2 as Filip Cvjeticanin connected on a 3-pointer. It ended up being the Eagles’ only lead all night.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Bowling green then scored five straight points to go up 7-3, before the Eagles tied the score on consecutive baskets from Demetris Morant and Zach Johnson.<\/div>\n
Johnson, a redshirt freshman, finished the contest with a career high 26 points\u00a0going 11 for 13 on field goal attempts.<\/div>\n

After The Falcons retook the lead at 9-7, the Eagles again tied the score, as Rayjon Tucker scored off of his offensive rebound. That would be the closest the Eagles got rest of the night.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After outscoring FGCU 26-16 to go into half leading 35-25, the Falcons continued their dominance in the second half, claiming leads of 46-30 and 48-34 near the midway point of the half.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
With Johnson and Christian Terrell, leading the charge back the Eagles were able to chip away at the lead, but were never able to overtake the Falcons.<\/div>\n
Terrell finished the night with 21 points, with many of them coming when FGCU was making it’s comeback.<\/div>\n

“I think Zach being aggressive gave me (scoring) lanes,” Terrell said, “and I was able to finish a little better than I had (in other games).”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Though Johnson was pleased with his performance, it was obviously hard for him to enjoy his individual achievement as the Eagles suffered their first loss in the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic, after coming away with victories in their other two games.<\/div>\n

“I tried to make the right decisions and just play,” he said. “We lost though. It’s not about what I did.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
NOTES:\u00a0<\/strong>Though the Eagles next game in on the road against national power Florida\u00a0on Friday\u00a0night, neither Terrell or Johnson seemed intimidated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“We like to compete,” said Terrell, as he was shaking his head ‘no’ when Dooley was asked if his players would feel intimidated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Johnson echoed similar sentiments.<\/div>\n
