After an approximate 40 minute delay to start the game, as a result of a basket structure needing repair after a Rams player dunked in the pregame warm-ups, the Eagles cruised to an 85-62 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Monday night in the Eagles’ men’s basketball home opener. The win was the first of the season for Florida Gulf Coast University, who dropped an 85-75 decision to Ohio University on Saturday.

Filip Cvjeticanin led the Eagles with 18 points, a career high, on six 3-pointers. Marc-Eddy Norelia had 15 points while Julian DeBose added 14. Also in double figures for the Eagles were Antravious Simmons (13) and Christian Terrell (11).

“I thought that (the delay) took the energy out of the entire building,” Eagles coach Joe Dooley said. “Not just the players, but everyone – the fans, were ready to go. You just have to adjust on the fly.”

Once play got underway, after being behind 13-11, FGCU went on a 19-0 run to take a 30-13 lead, before going into halftime up 42-13. They then opened the second half by outscoring the Rams (3-1) 25-6 to take a commanding 67-36 lead near the midway point of the half.

“I though our energy level was good in spurts,” Dooley said, “otherwise it wasn’t.”

In particular, he mentioned he was not happy with how the Eagles finished the game.

Dooley did have high praise though for Cvjeticanin and how the team found him for open shots, where he went 6 for 12 from beyond the 3-point line.

“He stretched the floor,” Dooley said. “(his teammates) did a good job finding him.”

The meaning of the game did not escape Cvjeticanin. Not only did he sit out all of last year recovering from back surgery, but the senior was also coming off a 3 for 9 shooting performance on Saturday.

“This feels awesome,” Cvjeticanin. “It was tough sitting out last year.”

He also said he never lost confidence in his shot.

“I believe in my shot,” Cvjeticanin said. “Not everyone will go in, You need to keep shooting.”

Also a bright spot was the crowd of 3,809.

“I am so proud to play here at FGCU,” DuBose said. “For the team to lose the key faces of the program and the fans are still coming out is incredible. It makes me want to play even harder.”

NOTES: The women’s basketball team, who defeated Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year was honored at halftime.
