{"id":37202,"date":"2015-09-29T22:53:21","date_gmt":"2015-09-30T02:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=37202"},"modified":"2015-09-29T22:53:21","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T02:53:21","slug":"3-year-old-dies-in-sr-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2015\/09\/3-year-old-dies-in-sr-82\/","title":{"rendered":"3-Year-Old Dies In SR 82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-37203\" title=\"FHP\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/FHP-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/FHP-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/FHP.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A 3-year-old was killed during a chain reaction crash Monday evening on State Road 82 near Gunnery Road, while her mother and\u00a04-year-old\u00a0sister\u00a0remain the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The Lee County Sheriff\u2019s Office (LCSO) says the driver of a\u00a0Ford F-250 failed to stop for slowing traffic on SR 82 and hit the rear of a Toyota holding\u00a0Monique Harris,\u00a0Trinity Handy,\u00a03, and\u00a0Taqueria Handy, 4.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Authorities say the crash set off a chain reaction pushing Harris\u2019\u00a0Toyota\u00a0into a\u00a0Kia, which in turn\u00a0struck a 2012 Subaru station wagon before overturning.<\/p>\n<p>The 4-year-old\u00a0is in serious condition at a Tampa General Hospital. Her mother, Monique, is suffering from serious back injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Lehigh Acres Fire Battalion Chief Lance Delgado says he isn\u2019t\u00a0surprised to hear of another fatal accident on SR\u00a082.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically in the morning, when we are getting our turnover from guys getting off shift, we\u2019ll ask, \u2018what happened with 82 last night,&#8217;\u201d said Delgado. \u201cNobody tells you how later on, how it affects you mentally, stays with you. It stays with you forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials say there are\u00a0plans to widen the road, but they don\u2019t start until 2017.\u00a0They say despite the continuing accidents, construction cannot begin sooner.<\/p>\n<p>An FDOT spokesman says\u00a0results of a speed study should be released in about two weeks. Researchers looked at the history of crashes in the area, as well as driver speeds.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the speed limit at most points throughout State Road 82 is 60 mph.\u00a0If officials\u00a0decide the speed limit should be lowered, it will not take long to replace the signs.<\/p>\n<p>LCSO says they have stepped up speeding patrols in the area during the past three weeks, following a crash in early September\u00a0that killed a\u00a05-year-old and her father.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say alcohol was not a factor in Monday\u2019s\u00a0crash, but the investigation remains open and charges are pending.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 3-year-old was killed during a chain reaction crash Monday evening on State Road 82 near Gunnery Road, while her mother and\u00a04-year-old\u00a0sister\u00a0remain the hospital.
