After wrapping up a series of votes today in opposition to the Administration’s nuclear agreement with Iran, Congressman Curt Clawson (Fl-19) issued the following statement:<\/p>\n

“There is no question that the so-called Iran deal\u00a0is\u00a0deeply flawed.\u00a0 To claim the U.S. cannot force a new\u00a0deal\u00a0grossly underestimates the leverage\u00a0we\u00a0have.\u00a0Access to the U.S markets, U.S. trade, and U.S. financial\u00a0institutions is crucial to\u00a0most of the free world\u2019s nations and companies, and for the Administration not to have harnessed this leverage is a tragically missed opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0 America is the engine for economic growth world-wide.<\/p>\n

“The world\u00a0does not need\u00a0the current deal\u00a0because instead of rendering Iran unable to ever\u00a0build nuclear weapons, it legitimizes Iran as a nuclear threshold state. \u00a0And\u00a0the\u00a0rhetoric of the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei this week, asserting that Israel\u00a0will not exist in\u00a025 years and there will be no dealing with the U.S. beyond\u00a0the nuclear talks, confirms\u00a0that this must be prevented. \u00a0We need for either the\u00a0current or the next Administration\u00a0to reject the proposed deal, and then use\u00a0our economic leverage with trading\u00a0partners to force a new agreement.<\/p>\n

“Let\u2019s take\u00a0all the time needed to do this correctly.\u00a0 Six U.N. Resolutions prohibiting Iran\u00a0from going nuclear,\u00a0plus conventional arms and missile embargos \u2013 are in place \u2013\u00a0supported by\u00a0financial sanctions and trade restrictions. \u00a0Continued support that protects our national defense from budget cuts is critical as history has taught us that \u2018Peace Through Strength\u2019 works.<\/p>\n

“With the proposed deal,\u00a0Iran will be able to produce as many\u00a0bombs as it likes.\u00a0This\u00a0deal\u00a0legitimizes the world\u2019s worst state sponsor of terrorism and\u00a0provides a cash\u00a0bonanza, while creating a pathway to economic prosperity.\u00a0\u00a0This agreement allows\u00a0the regime to build\u00a0advanced centrifuges, continue uranium enrichment, become a\u00a0legal nuclear\u00a0threshold state, buy conventional weapons and ballistic missiles, freely\u00a0export\u00a0energy, fund terrorist proxies, threaten Israel, hold American prisoners, and\u00a0even, via secret side deals, self-inspect nuclear weapons research sites.<\/p>\n

“Iran must\u00a0dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, which is left virtually intact in the\u00a0proposed deal.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s close every pathway\u00a0towards nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

“To not leverage our global clout and\u00a0influence squanders an historic opportunity.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0got to\u00a0negotiate from strength, like we do in successful business deals.<\/p>\n

“For the future of the civilized\u00a0world, let\u2019s leverage our global influence.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s insist on\u00a0a new deal that permanently\u00a0dismantles Iran\u2019s nuclear infrastructure.”<\/p>\n

Prior to voting against the Administration\u2019s nuclear deal with Iran, Clawson supported a measure in\u00a0the House\u00a0affirming\u00a0that the Administration did not comply with the requirement to disclose the entire agreement to the U.S.\u00a0Congress. \u00a0Clawson also today supported a measure suspending the authority of the President from conducting\u00a0further\u00a0nuclear talks with Iran until\u00a0January 21, 2017, the day after a new President is sworn into office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
