It is still too early to tell if she is going to make a full recovery but with all of the outpouring support and encouragement from the community she is staying strong. Lee County Domestic Animal Services is currently investigating this case of a stray female pit bull now in the care of Gulf Coast Humane Society GCHS. At this point in the investigation we cannot say whether the dog\u2019s wounds are the result of dog fighting or from an altercation with another dog not related to organized dog fighting.<\/p>\n

But according to GCHS, Sunset is known as a bait dog, which is a dog used to train other dogs to fight. It is an unfortunate reality that dog fighting is happening, and it’s happening in our own backyard.<\/p>\n

When making a determination of dog fighting, Lee County Domestic Animal Services officers evaluate several things: the condition of the dog, whether there is any evidence of dog fighting paraphernalia present at the scene and statements and\/or videos\/pictures provided by witnesses, if available.<\/p>\n

Lee County Domestic Animal Services investigated 20 cases of dog fighting in 2013 and nine cases in 2014. No arrests by law enforcement were made in any of the cases due to a lack of substantiated evidence. Organized dog fighting is difficult to investigate and even more difficult to prove. Organizers are savvy and continually move their operations. Notice of the fights are announced just prior to being held. By the time law enforcement can arrive they have already concluded the fight and have moved to another location.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
