The group of community-minded residents was put \u201cbehind bars\u201d for MDA\u2019s signature Lock-Up fundraiser at Jake\u2019s Wayback Burgers.<\/p>\n<p>Accused of having big hearts and being heavily armed with kindness, these \u201cjailbirds\u201d helped raise more than $4,500 for families affected by neuromuscular diseases in the Lehigh Acres area.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In order to be released, each jailbird\u2019s \u201cbail\u201d was set at\u00a0$1,600, and the money was\u00a0raised by encouraging friends, family, co-workers and business contacts to make contributions to MDA.\u00a0 The funds raised will help MDA assist hundreds of local individuals and families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle diseases throughout the Fort Myers area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-33708\" title=\"raised\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/raised-300x184.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/raised-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/raised.png 608w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Lock-Up also will help send Southwest Florida youngsters to MDA\u2019s summer camp at Rotary\u2019s Camp in Brandon, FL, where all activities are designed for kids with limited mobility, and many volunteers provide the one-on-one assistance needed to optimize participation. Some activities include archery, swimming, sports, and arts and crafts.<\/p>\n<p>MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association\u00a0also provides unparalleled health care services; advocates for the families it serves; and invests significant resources educating the medical and scientific communities, as well as the general public, about neuromuscular diseases affecting more than 1 million Americans.<\/p>\n<p>MDA maintains a network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics \u2014 38 of which are designated as MDA\/ALS centers \u2014 throughout the country.
