Lee County switched to a private medical helicopter service in 2012, and has since been trying to sell off its surplus copters. Two have been sold in the past couple months, allowing the county to upgrade nearly a dozen ambulances.<\/p>\n
A few months ago, the county bought four other state-of-the-art ambulances using a first round of money from the sale of a surplus helicopter. Those new ambulances should be on the road soon, said Lee County Public Safety Director Rob Farmer. The seven new ambulances voted on today will take about 120 days to be built and get on the roads. The county’s 50 ambulances are all varying ages, but some of them go back to 2008-2009 and have hundreds of thousands of miles on them, Farmer said. The new ambulances are both more fuel efficient and have additional safety improvements, like restraints for emergency personnel working in the back of the ambulances, he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Commissioners approved using $1.2 million from helicopter sales for seven new ambulances.
