{"id":30407,"date":"2014-04-20T15:30:41","date_gmt":"2014-04-20T19:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=30407"},"modified":"2014-04-20T15:30:41","modified_gmt":"2014-04-20T19:30:41","slug":"no-3-fgcu_wten-ends-season-with-4-1-loss-to-no-2-etsu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2014\/04\/no-3-fgcu_wten-ends-season-with-4-1-loss-to-no-2-etsu\/","title":{"rendered":"No. 3 @FGCU_WTEN Ends Season With 4-1 Loss To No. 2 ETSU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a match that was disrupted by the weather several times, the No. 3 FGCU women\u2019s tennis team ended its season with a 4-1 loss to No. 2 ETSU in Atlantic Sun Championship semifinal on Sunday afternoon and the UNF Tennis Complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The loss marks the end of a six-match unbeaten streak and brings the Green and Blue\u2019s overall record on the season to 14-8, the highest number of wins in FGCU\u2019s Division-I history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->\u201cToday we did not get the result we hoped for,\u201d head coach\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Courtney Vernon<\/strong><strong>\u00a0said. \u201cETSU stepped up on the important points and deserved the win today. We can learn a tremendous amount from our experiences this weekend and will come prepared and focused into next year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ETSU took the doubles point after wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. At the top-seed Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi defeated\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla.\/Wiregrass Ranch HS)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla.\/Wiregrass Ranch HS)<\/strong><strong>, 8-1. Playing two doubles, Sofia Espana and Salma Dahbi escaped defeat as they narrowly beat\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany\/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa\/De Kuilen HS)<\/strong><strong>, 8-7 (7-5), to clinch the point for the Bucs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In singles, the Bucs grabbed two quick wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to go up 3-0. Choo defeated Sarah Means 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while at No. 3 Guilia Andreazza beat Sterkel 6-1, 6-0.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Preventing ETSU to leave FGCU blank was\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Candela Munoz (Alicante, Spain\/Troy)<\/strong><strong>\u00a0posting a point for the Eagles with a win at No. 4. Handing Sofia Espana a straight-set loss, Munoz took the first set, 6-3, and dominated the second for a win of 6-2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately for the Eagles their scoring ways ended there as the next match to finish clinched the contest for ETSU as Gerbasi defeated\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago\/St. Joseph\u2019s Convent)<\/strong><strong>, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, in the No. 2 slot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI would be amiss if I didn\u2019t thank our two seniors, Bettina and Gyanna, for what they have given to FGCU women\u2019s tennis over the last four years,\u201d Vernon said. \u201cTheir contributions to this program have been tremendous. Bettina was an amazing captain this year.
