{"id":27930,"date":"2013-11-06T14:00:27","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T19:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=27930"},"modified":"2013-11-10T17:08:34","modified_gmt":"2013-11-10T22:08:34","slug":"cert-to-separate-from-fire-dept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2013\/11\/cert-to-separate-from-fire-dept\/","title":{"rendered":"CERT to Separate<br> From Fire Dept"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fbcoem.org\/clients\/1528\/120063.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"167\" \/>The Lehigh Acres Fire Board of Commissioners voted to separate the CERT program from the fire district and allow it to run as a separate entity.<\/p>\n<p>CERT is an acronym for the Community Emergency Response Team program, which was started in California, which educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response operations.<\/p>\n<p>Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Tejada, who heads up the local CERT program, was at the meeting and said he understand the commissioners&#8217; actions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good program and I would hate to see it go away,&#8221; Tejada told the commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>It was a unanimous vote by commissioners to separate CERT from any sponsorship by the fire district.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Pringle the board\u2019s attorney said CERT could file for nonprofit status and members of the commission suggested such things as fundraisers be held to support costs for training and any other items needed to make it a successful program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lehigh Acres Fire Board of Commissioners voted to separate the CERT program from the fire district and allow it to run as a separate entity.
