About Constitutionally Speaking<\/strong><\/p>\n

In August, 2008, Dave Shestokas started writing for an online magazine.\u00a0Among the legal subjects addressed was the criminal justice system.\u00a0 Comments on a piece about police searches of automobiles, involving search and seizure issues and the Bill of Rights<\/a>\u2019 4th Amendment<\/a> made it clear that many Americans did not have a deep understanding of their rights or their Constitution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dave\u2019s writing became devoted to writing about the source and origin of the Constitution from the Preamble<\/a> to the 27th<\/sup> Amendment<\/a>. The goal was to convey the Constitution\u2019s essence in a non-lawyerly way.\u00a0 A frequent editor was his mom (she\u2019s now 83). The thinking was if the writing made sense to her, it would make sense to others.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s only to say it\u2019s often a challenge for an attorney to write like a non-lawyer.\u00a0 Like any other line of work the law has its own language.\u00a0 Most folks need a translation when a mechanic talks about issues with their car. \u00a0Most of us would communicate better if we envisioned our Mom as our audience.\u00a0 Mom will tell you something isn\u2019t clear.\u00a0 Most others won\u2019t and likely will just stop paying attention. When Dave needs to get away from legal jargon, his Mom lets him know.<\/p>\n

The online readership grew to over 25,000 monthly, demonstrating a desire for constitutional knowledge that is not part of most Americans\u2019 standard education. A Facebook group<\/a> grew to over 3,000 members and Dave\u2019s Twitter<\/a> following exceeded 30,000.\u00a0\u00a0 In October, 2012, the\u00a0Constitutional Education and Legal News<\/a>\u00a0website was launched. Since that time there have been more than 250,000 visits to the site.<\/p>\n

With that background, Constitutionally Speaking<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is now on WGUF and streaming worldwide on the internet. \u00a0The program\u2019s goal is the same as the website: to bring the Constitution alive and explain the origins, purposes and philosophy of the document.\u00a0 While these days many Americans either yell at or talk past one another, they should have common ground in the Constitution.\u00a0 After all, philosophy does matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
