{"id":27347,"date":"2013-12-02T01:16:23","date_gmt":"2013-12-02T06:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=27347"},"modified":"2013-12-02T01:16:23","modified_gmt":"2013-12-02T06:16:23","slug":"canadas-rcmp-arrest-40-in-demonstration-over-shale-gas-exploration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2013\/12\/canadas-rcmp-arrest-40-in-demonstration-over-shale-gas-exploration\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s RCMP arrest 40 in demonstration over shale gas exploration."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Police in Canada have arrested around 40 people in a clash with protesters demonstrating against shale gas explorations in eastern New Brunswick.<\/div>\n<p><span><br \/>\nOn Thursday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) attacked the protesters trying to dismantle a highway barricade in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->&#8220;The RCMP is coming in here with their tear gas &#8211; they even had dogs on us,&#8221; said Susan Levi-Peters, the former chief of the nearby Elsipogtog aboriginal reserve, adding, &#8220;They were acting like we&#8217;re standing there with weapons, while we are standing there, as women, with drums and eagle feathers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports say that the protesters set several police vehicles on fire during the clash.<\/p>\n<p>The Elsipogtog chief and some of the reserve&#8217;s council members were reportedly among those arrested by the police.<\/p>\n<p>The incident came after activists and local aboriginals blocked a road near the town of Rexton around a week to show their opposition to shale gas explorations by SWN Resources Canada, a subsidiary of Southwestern Energy Co, in the area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police in Canada have arrested around 40 people in a clash with protesters demonstrating against shale gas explorations in eastern New Brunswick.
