It is the second time in program history that FGCU has won back-to-back A-Sun Player of the Week awards.

Penagos tallied his first strike of the weekend with a perfectly-executed 26th-minute heel flick goal on Friday evening against Lipscomb. Sophomore David Robledo (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest HS) corralled the ball and shoveled a pass back to Skylar Wilks (Tampa, Fla./Newsome HS), who sent a perfect left-footed cross into the middle of the box. From there, Penagos – with his back facing away from the net – flicked the ball first-touch inside the left netting (watch here as part of the complete highlights).

On Sunday, Penagos struck again, this time converting his second penalty kick of the season in the 13th minute versus Northern Kentucky (video). Penagos’s PK attempt wouldn’t have been possible without the speed of Santiago Echeverri (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS), whose run onto a thru ball was disrupted by a tackle in the box by the NKU goalkeeper. Penagos also converted a penalty in FGCU’s game at FAU in September and is responsible for both of the Eagles’ PKs this year.

Penagos now has four goals on the year to rank second on the Green and Blue in that category. Additionally, his two game-winning goals are tied for the most in the conference, and his eight points are tied for fifth in the A-Sun.

The only other time FGCU has had consecutive A-Sun performers of the week was Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 during the 2010 season when Deion Jones and Scott Harrison were tabbed with the recognition.

With the two wins to open league play, FGCU continued its dominance of the A-Sun as the Eagles have now run their conference regular-season record to 24-2-2 since the start of the 2010 season. In that span, 81 possible points could have been earned during the regular season, and FGCU has claimed a staggering 73 of them (90.1 percent).

FGCU returns to the pitch this weekend as it continues conference play at ETSU and USC Upstate Friday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 13, respectively. The match with the Buccaneers on Friday will be a battle of the only two unbeaten teams in the A-Sun through the first weekend of conference play.

2013-14 men’s soccer tickets are available by visiting the Alico Arena Ticket Office, calling 239-590-7145 or logging on to FGCUAthletics.com/Tickets.
