The FGCU women\u2019s tennis team returned for day two of the UCF Knights Invitational looking to improve after falling in all five singles matches during day one. Fortunately for the Eagles, Friday\u2019s performance motivated them to pick up three singles wins over Florida Atlantic Saturday in Orlando.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earning the Eagles first win was <\/strong>Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla.\/Wiregrass Ranch HS) <\/strong>as she nearly shutout Catalina Ene with a beautiful 6-1, 6-0 victory. Joining her sister to rack up another FGCU victory was <\/strong>Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla.\/Wiregrass Ranch HS) <\/strong>with a stellar 6-2, 6-3 defeating of Bianca Biglione.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rounding out the Eagles three straight-set victories to join the sisters in the winner\u2019s circle was <\/strong>Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany\/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) <\/strong>after putting up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Claire-Mitchel Andrews.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Showing a hard-fought effort and improvement from yesterday were <\/strong>Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa\/De Kuilen HS) <\/strong>and <\/strong>Candela Munoz Giron (Giron Alicante, Spain\/Troy)<\/strong>, but the two ultimately fell short of securing a win, as Botha lost 6-2, 6-4 and Munoz Giron 6-4, 6-3.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day on the doubles court, both pairs from FGCU took their opponents from USF into a tiebreaker, but couldn\u2019t quite clinch the win. The Means sisters battled through the close match before falling 8-7 (10-8), while Botha and Sterkel fell 8-7 (10-7).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cToday we had another opportunity to compete and be challenged,\u201d head coach Courtney Vernon said. \u201cThe girls have a lot of goals that they are working towards, which is great. We are learning and growing through adversities and challenges on the court.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Eagles return to the court tomorrow to face FAU in doubles play beginning at 10:00 a.m., with singles play against UCF to follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n
