Marked by an Eagle vs. Eagle battle, an inaugural collegiate victory and a Doubles Quarterfinals appearance day two of the battle for state glory at the Bedford Cup has come to a close<\/p>\n
After an appearance in last year\u2019s Round of 16, senior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky.\/Henry Clay HS)<\/strong> and tournament No. 1 seed Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain\/IES Ferran Tallada\/USC)<\/strong> aimed to stay alive longer this year motivated to play in the Quarterfinals, but what they didn\u2019t consider was having to beat each other to claim a spot. The two took to the court early Friday morning to determine who would advance and who wouldn\u2019t. After a tremendous representation of FGCU, Vives took the match in two sets, winning 6-2, 6-2.<\/p>\n Vives, the only FGCU player left in the main singles draw, will return to the court on Saturday for a Quarterfinal match against No. 5 seed Grayson Goldin of FSU, who earned an automatic spot in the Quarterfinals after his opponent in the Round of 16 retired during the second set due to an ankle injury. Goldin claimed the first set 6-3.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI played good tennis today and I\u2019m really happy about it,\u201d Vives said. \u201cIt feels great to be in the Quarterfinals of the tournament. As a team we got some good victories today. I also want to congratulate Chris for his first \u2018W\u2019 as an Eagle, it\u2019s a great accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n After falling in the first round, five Eagles played in Friday\u2019s singles consolation draw. Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla.\/Maclay HS) <\/strong>earned the first victory of his collegiate career, beating Bethune-Cookman\u2019s Gilbert Rotich 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). Joining Perrigan with consolation wins were Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla.\/Broward Virtual School\/Jacksonville)<\/strong> with easy 6-0, 6-1 defeat over Florida A&M\u2019s Jason Ulacio and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia\/Gimnasio Calibio) <\/strong>who took down Diego Garavito of B-CU 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “I’m really proud that Chris got his first collegiate win today,” head coach C.J. Weber said. “A year of hard work under his redshirt went into that. The win came in his hometown, so that makes it all the more special!”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Putting up a good effort but falling short in the consolation draw were Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil\/Colegio Fleming\/Tulsa)<\/strong>, falling to Stetson\u2019s Hans Adrian Riseng 6-1, 6-3 and Adrian Reid (Lima, Peru\/Altair School)<\/strong>, who despite close play, come up short to FAU\u2019s Gerald Nickerson falling 6-4, 7-5.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In the doubles main draw, Vives and Vaz put an 8-4 win over Lobelo and Garavito from B-CU, but fell 8-4 in the Quarterfinal to No. 1 seeded pair Nemcsek and Findel-Hawkins of UNF.
