\"\"On Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at\u00a011:32 p.m., Communications Operators with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a single-vehicle crash.\u00a0 The incident occurred near the\u00a0intersection of Schoolside Drive and East 3rd Street<\/a> in Lehigh Acres, Florida. Deputies responded to the scene to find a tan colored, 2000, Dodge Caravan rolled over on its side.\u00a0\u00a0Two occupants of the vehicle were\u00a0found, one, the driver, was deceased.<\/p>\n

Due to the nature of the incident, a Traffic Homicide Investigator with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit was assigned to continue looking into the circumstances of the crash.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the female passenger, identified as Brandy M. James of Lehigh Acres, age 29 (d.o.b. 5-17-84) was able to crawl out of the overturned vehicle.\u00a0 She was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.\u00a0 The driver of the vehicle is identified as 43 year old (d.o.b. 7-14-70) Jody Gaylon Tome of 1115 Westminster Street, Lehigh Acres, Florida<\/p>\n

Preliminary details of the crash indicate Tome was\u00a0southbound on East 3rd Street and attempted to\u00a0negotiate the sweeping\u00a0left-hand curve to begin heading east.\u00a0 The speed\u00a0at which he was traveling caused the\u00a0vehicle to leave the pavement\u00a0and strike\u00a0a sign on the side of the road.\u00a0 Then, the van\u00a0catapulted back onto the roadway across all lanes of travel\u00a0before\u00a0colliding\u00a0with a rock barrier on the opposite side of the street.\u00a0 The van went airborne and pitched to the extent the driver became partially ejected as a result of\u00a0not wearing\u00a0his seatbelt.\u00a0 As the vehicle fell to the ground, the driver’s head impacted\u00a0the asphalt causing what is believed\u00a0to be the fatal injury.\u00a0 The van continued in motion, struck a\u00a0utility pole, and came\u00a0to a final stop\u00a0on its side.<\/p>\n

It appears alcohol and the excessive speed are\u00a0contributing factors in the crash. The investigation continues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
