For others, they are a time to get ahead and prepare for the season, but for the FGCU softball team they are a time to give back to a community that has given them so much.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Three years ago head coach David Deiros was inspired to take the motivation his team saw on the field and duplicate it elsewhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->\u201cFGCU&#8217;s mission has always been to be an integral part of our community,\u201d Deiros said.\u00a0\u201cOur softball players are always eager to help the people of SW Florida \u2013 the people that have supported us since we opened our program 13 years ago.\u201d \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wanting his team to use its athletic abilities in a beneficial way, Deiros decided to spend a few days a year volunteering with the Lee County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Last weekend, the team completed its fourth project for the organization as they helped renovate a home, providing a new floor, updated cabinets and a fresh coat of paint.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHabitat for Humanity&#8217;s mission perfectly aligns with FGCU&#8217;s,\u201d Deiros said. \u201cHabitat\u2019s projects aim to help people realize \u2018The American Dream\u2019, and we are happy to participate every opportunity we can.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The satisfaction the Eagles felt after last weekend\u2019s remodel has inspired them to take their involvement to the next level and complete their biggest project ever \u2013 build a house from the ground up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOur fifth project will be our most ambitious to date,\u201d Deiros said. \u201cWe\u2019re planning to help build an entire house in a short period of time. Not only will the finished result be a benefit to the community, but it will be a way for the girls to use their skills for something much greater than themselves.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Habitat for Humanity provides homes for people in need so they may build better lives for their families.
