{"id":25793,"date":"2013-08-30T11:03:56","date_gmt":"2013-08-30T15:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=25793"},"modified":"2013-08-30T11:03:56","modified_gmt":"2013-08-30T15:03:56","slug":"ccsa-announces-conference-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2013\/08\/ccsa-announces-conference-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"CCSA Announces <br>Conference Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_25794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25794\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25794\" title=\"Svennson\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Svennson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emma Svensson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) is pleased to announce the additions of the University of the Incarnate Word, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the New Jersey Institute of Technology beginning with the 2013-14 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the CCSA institutions and our student-athletes, we are proud to welcome three outstanding universities to our membership,\u201d said CCSA Executive Director Ted Gumbart.\u00a0 \u201cUMBC, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of the Incarnate Word each help strengthen the overall performance of the CCSA, and all promote programs that value the full student-athlete experience.\u00a0 We look forward to building a great relationship with each of our new teams, and bragging often about their achievements in the classroom and in the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Incarnate Word will compete in both men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming, while UMBC and NJIT will compete in men\u2019s swimming, becoming the fifth, sixth and seventh members of the CCSA\u2019s men\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>FGCU, which only has a women&#8217;s swimming and diving program, claimed its fifth consecutive CCSA title last year, capturing 13 of a possible 20 first-place finishes en route to recording five program and conference records. The Eagles &#8211; who had 28 members named to the CCSA All-Academic Team this past season &#8211; return several key members from that championship squad, including reigning Swimmer of the Year\u00a0<strong>Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden\/Celsiusskolan)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The UIW men\u2019s program is entering its seventh season of competition while the women\u2019s program enters their 12th year.\u00a0 The UMBC swimming program enters its 28th season of competition in 2013-14, and has won a total of 19 conference championships in its history, having competed previously in the East Coast Conference, Northeast Conference and America East Conference.\u00a0 NJIT is entering its fifth season competing at the Division I level after becoming championship-eligible in 2009.\u00a0 The Highlanders\u2019 swimming program began in 1967-68 and has competed at the Division I, II and III levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecoming a member of the CCSA has completed one more piece of the Division I reclassification puzzle and solidified the opportunities for our swim and dive teams,\u201d said UIW Director of Athletics Mark Papich.\u00a0 \u201cHaving a home conference for competition provides a great benefit to our student-athletes both during and after our transition to Division I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the opportunity that the CCSA is extending to our men\u2019s program,\u201d stated UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall.\u00a0 \u201cThis move allows our swimmers the chance to compete and contend for a championship at the highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very excited to have our swimming program join the CCSA and its member institutions,\u201d added NJIT Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan.\u00a0 \u201cIt will provide new competitive horizons for our student-athletes and, in turn, to earn recognition for their accomplishments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2013-14 CCSA season begins in September and the CCSA Championships are set for Feb. 20-22, 2014 in Knoxville, Tenn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) is pleased to announce the additions of the University of the Incarnate Word, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the New Jersey Institute&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[114],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25793"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=25793"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25793\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=25793"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=25793"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=25793"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
