Unless you have come face-to-face with a natural disaster, it can seem unnecessary or even a bit paranoid to make a plan for a possible catastrophe. However, keeping your family safe during a disaster is a top priority. Developing a family disaster plan is the best way to ensure that your family is prepared and protected before a natural disaster strikes. Preparation could make the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n

Following are some tips to help you develop your plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

–Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.<\/p>\n

–Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.<\/p>\n

–Choose an out-of-state friend as a \u201cfamily check-in contact\u201d for everyone to call if the family gets separated and so other members of your family can check on you.<\/p>\n

–Contact the Lee County Emergency Management to learn about evacuation plans \u2013 and remember it usually depends on the direction of the storm.<\/p>\n

–Learn how and when to turn off the water, and electricity in your home.
\n–Finally, assemble a disaster supply kit with items you may need after the storm.<\/p>\n
