{"id":24554,"date":"2013-06-30T21:00:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T01:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=24554"},"modified":"2013-06-30T17:33:46","modified_gmt":"2013-06-30T21:33:46","slug":"public-intoxication-and-elected-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2013\/06\/public-intoxication-and-elected-officials\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Intoxication <br>And Elected Officials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Editorial by Robert Anderson<br \/>\nPublisher of the\u00a0<em>Lehigh Acres Gazette<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24555\" title=\"Drunk_man\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Drunk_man.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>It\u2019s recently come to light that on June 26; Lehigh Acres Fire Board Chairman Commissioner Larry Becker was so intoxicated he fall down a small flight of stairs in the back of Mirror Lakes Golf Club restaurant and bar and broke some ribs and lacerated his face, after drinking pitcher after pitcher of Michelob Light with his so-called friends.<\/p>\n<p>Why was he leaving the bar so intoxicated, was he going to drive has golf cart home?<\/p>\n<p>During the incident one of the bar maids even take off her blouse to try to stop his facial bleeding. Becker even had someone call the Fire Department to take him to hospital.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24560\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24560 \" title=\"Larry Becker\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Larry-Becker.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"152\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lehigh Acres Fire Dept<br \/> Chairman Larry Becker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One person who talked to us but Becker\u2019s public intoxication said maybe Mirror Lakes should name the bottom step \u201cBecker\u2019s Landing\u201d. According to unnamed sources Becker\u2019s favorite watering hole has been Mirror Lakes Golf Club for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Is this what we need from our local elected officials, public intoxication, and fallen down drunkenness in Lehigh Acres? What would have happened if he got to use his golf cart and drove home, property damage or even a death?<\/p>\n<p>Should politicians govern themselves in the exact same manner that the average taxpayer does? Or should they be held to a higher moral standard, and be held personally accountable for any improprieties and indiscretions that involve them, on any level. We, the citizens, are supposed to live up to a certain moral and legal conduct, and therefore our elected leaders should be setting the examples.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Statute Annotated Section 856.011 provides that no person shall be intoxicated and disturbing the peace while in public. The statute also prohibits endangering the safety of another person or property while intoxicated.<\/p>\n<p>So what are your feelings about this issue? Should Becker give a public apology? Or resign from the Lehigh Acres Fire Board?
