After providing volunteer firefighting services for thirteen (13) years, the District transitioned into a full-time/professional-paid organization. The District began to hire firefighters with training in emergency medical care to provide pre-hospital treatment to the sick and injured. In 1976 an ambulance was added to the response capabilities of the District, which was funded through community support.

In 1981, the District realized Advanced Life Support (ALS) care was necessary and began the first Paramedic services. As a result, the name was changed to the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District, which is one of only two ALS Fire District transport services in Lee County. Today, the ALS service is responsible for preserving life and property to an area totaling 143 ± square miles and an estimated population of 90,000 citizens.

Over the years, the District has evolved into a highly sophisticated public safety rescue system that has saved hundreds of lives and reduced the severity of countless injuries and illnesses. The District has a vision that guides the organization towards excellence. Currently the District provides the following Core Services: Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Life Safety Management, Training and Community Emergency Preparedness.

With an increase in population of 54% over the last ten (10) years, our incident call volume has increased 73% within this same time period (2002-2012). Current staffing levels provide for approximately 120 full-time personnel to provide the emergency response and administrative needs of the community.

At 5:00 p.m., May 28, 2013, the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District would like to invite the public to celebrate this occasion with cake and refreshments before the regularly scheduled Board of Fire Commissioners meeting.
