Although Pat insists, \u201cI planned better this year,\u201d she shows up with three bags of groceries.<\/p>\n<p>Last May, and although I seemed ungrateful, some items were mixed blessings. I regarded the half-bottles of unfamiliar salad dressings as a tasting experiment. A vegetable-parmesan cheese was confusing. Was it produce or dairy? A strong odor seeping from a torn corner knocked my head back \u2013 definitely cheese. Until I unscrewed it, the jar labeled peach-mango salsa appeared to be a real find. Cheerios anyone?<\/p>\n<p>It was Pat\u2019s one and one-half pounds of sunflower seeds that presented a cooking challenge. Had I missed a food column featuring this unusual ingredient? I hated to waste them \u2013 would squirrels nibble at salted seeds? I chucked them in the freezer and tossed them months later.<\/p>\n<p>Last year I defrosted a roast, but was uncertain whether it was beef or pork.<\/p>\n<p>Hubby suggested, \u201cJust bake it until it looks done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although, I \u201crolled-my-eyes,\u201d I realized he might have something there and two hours in the oven would work for either. A tentative bite was enough for us to realize it was neither beef nor pork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVenison?\u201d\u00a0 Hubby offered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould it be squirrel? Nah!\u201d I tossed the mystery meat into Sasha\u2019s food bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Pat continues tapping on my door. I\u2019m going to suggest she donate this year\u2019s largess to a food bank. Whoops! Is that a pint of Norman Love Gelato peeking out?<\/p>\n<p>I snatch the bags from her arms and gush, \u201cThank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe next year\u2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s spring in Florida and snowbirds are packing.
