{"id":22693,"date":"2013-04-21T23:21:10","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T03:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/?p=22693"},"modified":"2013-04-21T23:21:10","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T03:21:10","slug":"eagles-complete-play-at-a-sun-sand-volleyball-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/2013\/04\/eagles-complete-play-at-a-sun-sand-volleyball-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"Eagles Complete Play at A\u2013Sun Sand Volleyball Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-22650\" title=\"FGCU S V\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/FGCU-S-V-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/FGCU-S-V-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/FGCU-S-V.jpg 687w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The FGCU sand volleyball team fought hard to stay alive but eventually fell to No. 3 Jacksonville on the final day of play at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Sand Volleyball Championships Sunday afternoon at the Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex.<\/p>\n<p>The Green and Blue finish the 2013 season with a 5-10 overall record.<\/p>\n<p>FGCU took a quick 2-0 lead in the match after sophomores\u00a0<strong>Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind.\/Yorktown HS)\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla.\/Buchholz HS)\u00a0<\/strong>claimed a win at No. 5 (21-17, 21-19) and sophomore\u00a0<strong>Liga Strautniece (Riga, Latvia\/Rigas Anglu Gimmazija)<\/strong>\u00a0and junior\u00a0<strong>Christine Pinder (Gainesville, Fla.\/Buchholz HS\/Houston\/Central Florida CC)<\/strong>\u00a0picked up a sweep (21-9, 21-14) in the No. 4 position.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The Dolphins responded when the No. 1 pair of Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>won in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-10, over the senior duo of\u00a0<strong>Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla.\/Jupiter HS\/Clemson)\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla.\/DeSoto County HS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Next up was the No. 3 pair of senior<strong>\u00a0Lindsey Childs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.\/South Plantation HS)<\/strong>\u00a0and sophomore<strong>Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla.\/Spanish River HS)<\/strong>. Childs and Mesner took the first set 21-11 and Gabriela Roman and Alyssa Robertson rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the second set to force a third set, which they won 15-11 to complete a 11-21, 21-19, 15-11 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Junior\u00a0<strong>Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla.\/Fort Myers HS\/Marshall)<\/strong>\u00a0and sophomore\u00a0<strong>Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind.\/Wapahani HS)<\/strong>, playing in the No. 2 spot, would participate in the deciding match. The Dolphin duo of Kendall Courtney and Niatha Cullen took the first set 21-19, but Holm and Masters fought hard in the second game to pick up a 21-19 win to tie the match at 1-1.
