Dr. Patricia Washington<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nDr. Patricia A. Washington, Professor Emeritus – Florida Gulf Coast University.
\nDr. Washington began writing poetry and articles as an undergraduate student in Chicago. During this time she became a member of the Organization of Black American Culture (OBAC) Writers\u2019 Workshop under the auspices of the late Mr. Hoyt Fuller, Editor of (Negro Digest) Black World.\u00a0As a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh she was a member of the Africana Studies Writers Workshop under the auspices of the late August Wilson and Professor Rob Penny.\u00a0In 1997 her short story \u201cThe Face\u201d was selected for publication in NOMMO an OBAC writer\u2019s retrospective published by OBA House & the Illinois Arts Council.\u00a0Since moving to Southwest Florida she has been a member of the Southwest Florida Writers; Gulf Coast Writers Association and Art Poems; a participant in the Sanibel Island Writers Conference [Poetry Workshops]; poem \u201cOur Children\u201d read at the opening session of\u00a0the Florida Coalition for Children by Nadereh Salim CEO Children\u2019s Network of South Florida; recipient of a 2nd place award for poetry by the Gulf Coast Writers Association; and founder \/ host of the SouthWest Florida Poetry Workshop in Fort\u00a0Myers, Florida.<\/p>\n
Poetry: Dancing Across the Page Without Falling Off the Edge<\/p>\n
A Poet is one who\u00a0compacts words\u00a0(although some may say compresses words) to paint a picture, tell a story or\u00a0 convey emotion(s).<\/p>\n
In my opinion, poetry provides the Poet with the opportunity to\u00a0use rhythm,\u00a0free verse, prose,\u00a0blank verse,\u00a0etc.,\u00a0to write\/talk about just about any subject that interests them or their audience.<\/p>\n
Many poets\u00a0use the written word as well as the\u00a0spoken word to share their art with\u00a0audiences.<\/p>\n
Good poets have the vision of an artist, the ear of a musician\/singer and the ability to make words dance across the page without falling off the edge.<\/p>\n
I will bring\u00a0a few recorded poets and live poets.\u00a0 After the readings we will discuss crafting\u00a0and reading\u00a0poems that dance across the page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
